Welcome to the new look Nick Rains Photography Website. We have tried to incorporate a more modern blogging-style layout to keep things up-to-date, whilst still including more extensive image galleries of Australia, print sales shopping cart and a host of new features. In particular, have a look at the new slideshows from various countries - full hi-res images filling your screen.

Please considering registering, there will be quite a bit of free material deeper in the site in the very near future - videos and articles - you only need to register once and we promise not to bombard you with emails!

Surf Carnival - Lumix GH1

45-200mm

Last week I went along to the State Surf Lifesaving Championships at Kurrawa Beach on the Queensland Gold Coast. It was a grey day with threatening clouds, certainly not your typical 'Beautiful one day, perfect the next' sort of day, but that did not daunt the competitors and the choppy waves made the surf boat competition that much more exciting. More than one competitor was spilled out into the surf, some oars and sweeps were broken and in one case the whole boat up-ended throwing the five crew members in all directions.

Lumix ZR1

I've recently been working with an illustrious group of photographers on a  'Day in the Life of Australia' style project. Ken Duncan, Peter Eastway, Bil Bachman, myself and others will be shooting with Panasonic cameras around the country. I'll have more about this on April 1st but since today was Clean Up Australia Day I took one the the cameras I'll be using on the project, the Lumix ZR1, along to see how it performed...

What's 8 feet long and hungry?

On a completely non-photograhic subject, we had an unwelcome visitor to our chook shed last night and this morning I had to deal with the results...

Aperture 3

A little white box just arrived in the mail from Apple - the hugely reworked Aperture 3. It's installing now, and I'll make some  comments over the next few days or so, as I get the hang of it. First impressions from the spec list in the press kit are good, there are tons of new features including - yay - local adjustments and proper geotagging.

Check out the Apple site here:

Spice Islands Video

Back in October 2009 I went along to shoot the eastern Indonesian Islands for the owners of the MV Orion. There is an image gallery here as well.

Sub Antarctic Islands Video

I was lucky to be invited on board the MV Orion as a guest lecturer for an expedition down to Macquarie Island and the NZ Sub Anatartic Islands. There's an image collection here, but the video captures the essence of my experience in ways that stills cannot.

Seminar in Perth - Feb 8th.

Whilst I’m in Perth for a workshop I will also be speaking at the Visible Light conference on Feb 6-7 and presenting two seminars on Monday Feb 8 in conjunction with Iconic Images International.
